We are offering a number of social events to promote the jubilation and wellness of members of our community (i.e. for funsies).
Wednesday 8th, November
Workshop: “Publishing in academic journals: tips to help you succeed” provided by Taylor and Francis (publishers of Emu Austral Ornithology)
Taylor and Francis’ ‘Publishing in academic journals: tips to help you succeed’ talk will guide you through how to choose a journal, ideas for improving your chances of publication, and what you can do once your article is published to increase its impact. The workshop will cover current trends in publishing, article metrics, use of social media, the key information sources and tools available for authors, and what you can (and should) be doing to help get that paper published. This workshop is aimed at students, but open to all and drinks and nibbles will be served. The workshop will be held at the conference venue after the conclusion of the conference presentation session.
Wednesday evening may also be a time for local ornithological club meetings and catching up with colleagues in the many nearby pubs.
The AOC “Bird brains” Trivia night
Migrate across the road from the conference venue at 8pm to The Deck on the Geelong foreshore, for an evening testing your trivial capacities, be they ornithological or more prosaic. Form teams (flocks?), for a quiz that may ruffle feathers, but allow the winners to preen themselves in glory.
Thursday 9th, November
Conference dinner plus band
We are excited to be able to offer you two course dinner with canapés at the Simmonds Stadium, Kardinia Park hallowed ground of the Geelong CATS football team. The cost of dinner is included in the registration price. Dinner will be followed by presentation of the Serventy and Hobbs medals 2016/17. We are also providing bush dancing, courtesy of the Billy Tea Bush Band to get us all up and on our feet!
Friday 10th, November
Pub night in Geelong
For those of us still standing and up for some socialising there is a list of local restaurants and pubs that we recommend for grabbing a post-conference drink or two.
